Webmaster's notes:

The 1949 London sessions for the Columbia label

Andrés Segovia arrived in London preparing to record the Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's concerto, Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, No. 1 in D major, Op. 99. The concerto was composed in 1939, just before Castelnuovo-Tedesco moved to the US and he dedicated the work to Andrés Segovia. He had been performing it for a few years and some of the earlier reviews of performances had been mixed.  In 1949, the concerto was 10 years old and Segovia felt that it was now ready to preserve on vinyl. He chose to record the concerto for the Columbia label. While the Castelnuovo-Tedesco concerto would be the focal point of the Columbia recording sessions and would always be issued on Side 1 with no other selections (until the HMV Treasury reissue in 1978), Side 2 would require additional material. Two weeks prior to recording the concerto, Segovia recorded a number of solo guitar pieces to fill the second side of the release. He recorded more solo pieces than would fit on one side of a vinyl LP so Columbia issued the LP in different countries with different track listings on Side 2.

Side 1 (all LP releases would place the concerto on Side 1 by itself until the HMV Treasury reissue in 1978)
